2. Apply Warm Cream Eyebrow Wax, Muslin Strips, then Press and Pull!

Dip a petite applicator into the warmed eyebrow wax and apply a thin layer to the center area between brows {outside the outline you’ve drawn freehand or with the help of an eyebrow stencil}following the direction of hair growth. {Remember: eyebrow hair may grow in various directions, so if in doubt, use an eyebrow brush to ascertain the natural pattern, then apply a small amount of wax to each area}.

Place a small muslin strip over the area where you’ve applied the wax. Press firmly in the direction of hair growth, get a good grip on one end of the muslin and with the other hand stretch the skin taut, then quickly pull the strip off in the opposite direction of hair growth. Immediately place your hand {or fingers}on the newly waxed area. This will help to ease the stinging sensation.

Repeat the above steps by applying eyebrow wax to other areas, placing muslin strips, pressing, holding skin taut and pulling, until the hair outside the marked brow outline has been removed. Don’t worry about stragglers. You can remove these individually with tweezers.

3. Eyebrow Wax Clean Up and Soothing Aftercare

Step by Step Instructions on How to Use an Eyebrow Razor

1. First: Shape and Trim Eyebrows

It’s recommended NOT to rely on an eyebrow razor for initial brow shaping or as the primary maintenance tool. The main shaping of the brow should be done by waxing, then cleaning up visible stragglers with tweezers, and eliminating long hairs by using scissors to trim eyebrows. Nevertheless, both dark and fair-haired women often have small or fine hairs { blond peach fuzz or sparse dark hairs which are difficult to detect}, above, below and along the sides of the eyebrows. These hairs may be difficult to eliminate with tweezers, and waxing may not lift them all if they grow in various directions. If these little hairs go unattended, the skin won’t be smooth, and as a consequence, cosmetic products may not spread smoothly and powdered makeup may stick to fine {almost invisible} hairs and make them visible, interfering with brow symmetry and definition. That’s where an eyebrow razor comes in.

2. Hold the Eyebrow Razor on an Angle and Keep the Grasp Light

Take a small eyebrow razor – preferably one that’s a blade style {not the same ones you use for shaving your legs}, and quickly cleanup the fine hairs just above, below and around the sides of the already defined / tinted / colored brow shape. How? Take a light hold of the eyebrow razor, holding the blade at an angle, and using short strokes, move the razor against the growth of the hair, first along the outer side area, careful not to remove hairs that form part of the natural brow body, and working inward and upward.

3. Start from the Outer Edge – Work Against the Grain of Hair Growth

Work lightly and gently from the outer edge to the area below the lower brow line, cleaning up under the arch working toward the inner area closest to the nose, angling as you go. Continue using short strokes against the grain of the natural hair growth but without pressing hard against the skin to cause chaffing or irritation. Press lightly and drag the blade gently in ONE direction, then lift and go to the next area. Don’t go over the same area because this may cause redness. The idea of using a razor is not to scrape the skin, but to lightly whisk away fine hairs that other depilation methods missed. Don’t use soap and water. Don’t rub vigorously. Don’t move back and forth. Be gentle and keep a light hand on the eyebrow shaper razor.

4. Use the Razor Above the Brow without Touching the Main Contour

Remove the hairs above the brow {no it’s not taboo}, being careful not to catch any of the main hair that provide contour. It’s important to have chosen eyebrow shavers or razors in blade-style devices, which will be easy to maneuver and aren’t too sharp so as to nick the skin, and not one that may be too wide, which may cause you to inadvertently whisk off important hairs that give the brow its shape.

Editor’s Note:
Never use razors, tweezers or wax on any hair in the body of the brow and never eliminate hairs that provide the basic contour to the shape – no matter how thick and bushy you brows may be naturally. Most brow problems can be corrected with brushing, trimming long hairs with scissors, waxing, tweezing and finally eliminating fine stragglers with a razor.

5. Avoid Slips

No matter where you’re working in the brow area, from the outer edge to the bridge of the nose, remember to keep the blade angled with the plastic edge AWAY FROM the main body of brow hair. This will help you avoid unnecessary slips.

6. Check Smoothness

Run your fingers over the skin to FEEL if the area is smooth. Remember that an eyebrow razor is primarily used to eliminate hairs that are NOT readily visible and to give the skin a SMOOTH finish. You may not see a big difference before applying foundation, a cream eye-base or powdered shadows, but the difference will be noticeable when you start applying makeup. The use of a razor will provide a clean, crisp finished look.

This is not a purely manual or an electric eyebrow razor but a battery operated device {which is in fact what most so called “electric” eyebrow razors tend to be}. It does have features that moste electric shavers offer, like a pivoting head and micro-blades {and comes with 2 grooming combs} for trimming brows and eliminating facial hair. It operates with a single triple-A battery so it’s light enough to use, but it tends to be best for whisking away fine peach fuzz on larger facial areas and less practical at smoothly removing delicate brow hairs.

Is it a good product?

Customer product reviews suggest that although some ladies love the Panasonic Eyebrow Razor and use it regularly for brow maintenance, it must be noted that it may {and often does} pull out coarser hairs {which is not only painful but not what a razor should do}. The point of using a brow razor is to gently remove small stragglers and brow fuzz without irritating the skin, and the Panasonic device does so in some cases but not consistently for all women.

Is it Expensive?

When compared to disposable manual eyebrow shaper razor products that are priced under five dollars, the Panasonic razor seems quite expensive at just under twenty dollars, but in the electric eyebrow razor category it’s one of the cheapest.

4. hold the area tight with one hand and with the other use the tweezers, removing hairs in the direction they grow so as to lift them out by their roots and not cause breakage. A hot cloth can be applied every few hairs to open pores and make plucking easier. Also, tweezing quickly is better than too slow.

5. tweeze hairs individually and not in clumps – although two or more very fine hairs can be pulled if it’s not too uncomfortable.

6. tweeze in any order you like. Yes, you should remove hair ABOVE and below the brow, as well as between the eyes on the bridge of the nose. Check you’re not over-tweezing by pausing frequently and looking at your progress. Thicker brows are always better than ones that are TOO thin.

How to Shape Eyebrows 7, 8, 9….The Finishing Touches

7. When all the unwanted hairs are gone, wash your face to remove the white outline and refresh the skin. Some ice on the area can cool, sooth and close pores. Add a touch of unscented aloe gel or a fragrance-free moisturizing lotion of your choice.

Use an eyebrow shaper or stencil once again to keep the form while you apply powder to the hair within the shape, and follow the contour of the shape to create an outline around eh brow – this defines them nicely. Fill gaps with hair strokes using a finely sharpened pencil. Finish with some gel or eyebrow wax.

Editor’s Note: I don’t recommend using the newest plastic eyebrow shaper tools that are a device with a handle. They tend to not rest flat enough on the face to be able to draw a good outline. Use the thin plastic stencils instead.

Using makeup remover and cotton pads {or pre-prepared makeup remover towelettes} cleans the face and remove makeup. Wash with a cleanser, then exfoliate the brow area. Pat dry. Apply witch hazel to disinfect.

2. Brush and Trim the Brows

Get comfy in front of a well-lit mirror and brush the brow up and over, then down so the longer hairs are visible. Using curved scissors, trim the long hairs. Bush again, trim stragglers – only the ones that extend below the natural eyebrow shape. Don’t cut too much. Now, brush hairs back so they lay flat.

3. Measure and Mark Where to Begin Shaping / Trace Eyebrow Stencil Outline

Take a long eyebrow pencil and hold it against the side of the nose and mark the point where the pencil hits the brow. Mark it with a white highlighter pencil. This is where the inner brow should begin. Do the same for both sides. You may also measure the eye length and use that as a guide to mark the distance between each brow. {For example, if your eye is 3 centimeters long, the space between the two brows should also be 3 centimeters.} If you’re going to use a professional stencil, now is the time to place it on the start point and trace the contour using the white highlighter pencil. If you’re not going to use an eyebrow stencils kit you’ll need to mark the outer brow ending and the highest point where the arch will be. {Watch the videos below to learn how to do this freehand, and for detailed instructions on How to Use Eyebrow Stencils, see related post.}

4. Apply Hot Washcloth

Using hot water and a washcloth, apply heat to the brow area to open pores and make eyebrow plucking easier. Repeat this process as you pluck eyebrows little by little. Also, apply witch-hazel to the area throughout the plucking process.

5. Pluck Eyebrows

{To choose your best eyebrow plucker or tweezing device, see related post entitled: Tools and Products to Prepare Before Starting to Pluck Eyebrows.}

{a} Starting from the outer corner and working inward, pluck eyebrows using slanted tweezers by pulling the hairs in the direction they’re growing.

{b} Using your chosen eyebrow plucker, try to grasp the hairs as close to the root as possible without pinching the skin.

{c} Hold the skin tight, using two fingers, as you tweeze to lessen discomfort. Use sharp movements to pull individual hairs as quickly as possible, one after the other. Pause every few hairs to brush the brow, dab the area with witch hazel, check that you’re not removing too much, and press a hot cloth to the area again and again. Take your time. Don’t start to pluck eyebrows if you’re in a rush.

{d} Learning how to pluck eyebrows is something you need to get a feel for as you develop your own shape. Generally, it’s good to pluck from the outer edge, then toward the arch, and finally clean up the inner corner and the area between the brows, but the exact order isn’t written in stone.

{e} If you have fine hairs on the top of the brow these may be removed with tweezers or a razor. It’s not taboo to remove hair from the upper brow, however most women don’t need to eliminate more than an odd straggler. It’s never a good idea to take much off the top because it can destroy your natural shape.

{f} Never remove hairs from the main body of the brow.

{g} The biggest mistake is over-plucking. Fuller brows are more flattering than thin ones.

6. Finishing Touches

• Place a cold pack {or some ice wrapped in a cloth} on the brow/eye area and relax
• Wipe off the white markings used to determine the brow shape
• Cleanse with witch hazel
• Add aloe gel to cool / sooth, then some unscented moisturizing lotion
• the ice pack may be added again to relax the eyes and reduced redness

It’s not recommended to pluck eyebrows then immediately apply makeup. Wait a few hours, preferably overnight.

Knowing how to pluck eyebrows in order to achieve professional results is about getting into the habit of doing little things that are normally done in a salon, but that may be omitted at home. Here are some salon tricks that make brows look and feel great.

Most of the fancy and expensive precision eyebrow plucker devices and automatic tweezers are not as effective as a simple pair of well made tweezerman tweezers, which I highly recommend.

{A} Tweezerman Stainless Steel Slant Tweezer

If you’re looking at other devices and wondering if they work, here’s a brief review of popular eyebrow plucker, tweezing devices, scissors and razors:

{B} Princess Care automatic eyebrow plucker is an instrument that’s suppose to offer a painless way to pluck eyebrows and tweeze fine hairs, but it’s not as well constructed as it could be and isn’t easy to use. For the price, these automatic tweezers don’t offers any extra value and are not as good as a pair of stainless steel tweezers.

{C} Clamp style eyebrow plucker tools like the Squeezer Tweezers, theoretically provide a better grip, but because the devices are large, they tend to get in the way of seeing fine eyebrow hairs. Despite their German engineering and good reputation, I don’t recommend them for DIY eyebrow care. Clamp style eyebrow pluckers are best for working on someone else’s brows or for styling mens brows where there may be thicker hairs to remove. Men appreciate the way the handles are sturdily constructed and provide better grip.

{D} Of all the unusual tweezers and eyebrow plucking instruments, the Regine Extra-wide Grip Stainless Steel Slanted Tweezers {made in Switzerland} are a good product that work effectively and offer a little more area to grip without a massive handle or to get in the way. If you can afford to spend almost thirty dollars on a pair of precision tweezers, these would be the ones to choose

{E} For men and women who prefer a scissor-style handle with good grip, the Tweezerman Scissor Tweeze is a good eyebrow plucker device. Men tend to like this instrument because it’s solidly made and easy to hold.

{F} Perfect Beauty Pro Tweezers in the SEAFOAM collection are good instruments that offer solid grip, slanted tips, and come with a lifetime sharpening guarantee {the same as Tweezerman }, and come in funky colors.

{G} Tinkle Eyebrow Razor sets retail for just a few dollars and work like a charm. These razors aren’t sharp enough to cut the skin. Tinkle regular eyebrow razors are quite large so for fine work, you may want the mini Japanese razor designs which are available in {H} below.

{H} The Japanese Mini-T Eyebrow Razors that are made by KAI {and come in packs of 3 } are good little devices to maintain the brow between plucking or waxing. These have sharp stainless steel blades that work marvelously for men or women and can be used anywhere on the face.

{I} The Tweezerman Facial Hair Scissors are excellent, made in Italy from stainless steel, and ideal for the ladies. Men may find that the handles a bit too small, but for most women they’re excellent for trimming wayward brow hair. They’re affordable and good quality.

{J} Although the Perfect Beauty Eyebrow Scissors are more expensive {more than double the price of the above Tweezerman designs}, they may be a good choice because they have handles with excellent grip. These are German made stainless steel curved eyebrow scissors for men and women.

{K} The top of the line eyebrow plucker kit that I recommend is the Anastasia Brow Tool Kit that includes customized slanted stainless steel tweezers made in Italy, precision stainless steel curved eyebrow scissors, and a set of Anastasia’s famous eyebrow shaping stencils. The Anastasia Brow Tool Kit includes a carrying case.

How to Calculate Laser Hair Removal Prices
