When you enter a clinic to have a cosmetic eyebrow tattoo procedure, naturally you will have researched information to know what an eyebrow tattoo is all about and what benefits it will bring to you and what the potential risks may be.

You will naturally expect that a trained aesthetician or cosmetic permanent makeup specialist will offer you their eyebrow tattooing expertise in a professional and hygienic manner during the tattoo eyebrows operation and that the equipment used will be modern and the best available in your area.

So after you have had an initial consultation with your cosmetician and have been shown pictures of tattoo eyebrows and have selected what shape and color you want, you will probably leave the procedure in the hands of the experts. But eyebrow tattoo pictures and a Q & A during a brief consultation may not provide all you need to know.

Since you are about to have ink permanently injected under your skin that will last at least 5 years, and will be visible to everyone you encounter for a long time, and will be the first impression you give to the world, I suggest that you delve a little deeper below the surface of eyebrow tattoos.

An eyebrow tattoo is a delicate procedure that requires skill to do correctly and also requires the correct instruments, needles and equipment. It also demands the application of anesthetic to keep you comfortable before and during the operation, be it a topical cream or spray or some kind of anesthesia to dull the pain. Then, once you have received your permanent eyebrow tattoo you will need to be sure that your care provider has given you what you need to heal properly and that the brow region will not become needlessly infected.

Newly tattooed eyebrows need to be cared for and guarded from infection and it is also imperative that you return to visit your cosmetician at least once for a post-operation assessment of healing and perhaps even some touchups.

Permanent Eyebrow Tattoos – General Overview

I want to go through some of the procedures that involve this specialized field of tattoos for women and the types of products specific to the permanent eyebrows industry that are used so that you can be sure you are receiving the best cosmetic tattoo eyebrows that are possible. Don’t make the mistake of walking into a shop and saying, ‘tattoo my eyebrows, please’ and not know what you can have or what it will be like and then end up looking for a very expensive eyebrow tattoo removal clinic.

An eyebrow tattooing procedure can be very comfortable and trouble free if you know what to look for, what to ask, and have selected a clinic, tattoo shop or aesthetician wisely. Before I decided who would tattoo my eyebrows, I read as much information as possible and went to several clinics for consultations, first to have questions answered, and second, to view the facilities before scheduling an appointment.

A good clinic will give you a local or topical anesthetic that will numb the region where the tattooed eyebrow will be. This is essential because the micropigmentation needles will rapidly penetrate and puncture your skin in a very small area during an hour or so and this can be very shocking to that delicate area of the face and very painful without anything to numb the sensations. If a good anesthesia has been properly applied, you can expect to feel nothing more than a tickle, a slight bit of pressure or a little tug like plucking your brows, but without any sharp pain at all.

Cosmetic tattoos are different from artistic permanent tattoo treatments because your facial procedures will be done in a clinical environment and not in some dingy tattoo shop. The comfort level you should be offered (and must demand) should equal that which is offered at a dentist or a doctor’s office or with a plastic surgeon. Anything less is unacceptable.

Having a successful eyebrows tattooing procedure requires these 10 basic things:

a well trained and experienced permanent makeup specialist or aesthetician

a good sketch drawn onto your brow with the final shape YOU want

the right pigments or ink color that will match your skin tone and hair color

receiving proper anesthesia before the procedure begins

the use of a modern rotary machine

the right selection of needles for the right style of cosmetic tattoo

numbing creams or anesthesia during the procedure to ensure your comfort

proper application of aftercare products immediately following the procedure

the right aftercare products at home to avoid swelling and infection

a follow-up visit with your tattooing specialist a week or two after the procedure

The Anesthesia or Numbing Agent

Cosmetic tattooing and permanent makeup is not only for the brow. Many people schedule several sessions to have tattooed eyebrow procedures as well as to have eyes lined and lips enhanced with liner or completely filled in with color. Each procedure takes about 1 hour, however if a brow must be reconstructed after an illness or due to burns or if there are any other issues that complicate a tattooing procedure it will take longer.

In all cases a numbing agent will be applied to the area. This is how:

The area will be cleaned and disinfected.

Then a numbing agent will be applied using a sterilized cotton swab.

It will take 15 to 20 minutes for the anesthesia to take effect.

Then the anesthesia, if it is a cream, will be wiped away and the area cleaned and dried.

After that, the eyebrow guide line will be drawn onto the brow area to be tattooed. This must be done quickly so the anesthetic does not wear off.

It is also possible that the aesthetician may draw the brow first, then apply a numbing agent. After waiting the same 20 minutes, it may be blotted and the micropigmentation may begin.

Most numbing agents are safe for eyes, eyebrows and lips and some creams are very smooth and effective especially those that contain about 4% Lidocaine made especially for eyebrow permanent makeup applications and other delicate facial procedures. There are also anesthetic ointments that numb instantly without the 20 minute wait. These ointments are also good to have applied during the procedure because in my experience one application for the entire hour is never enough.

Soothing and Numbing

Your aesthetician or eyebrow micropigmentation specialist may also use such things as tea tree oil or even just some aloe mixed with a sterile gel and some anesthesia containing Lidocain or some other numbing agent. The tea tree or aloe will help sooth and avoid excessive redness or irritation while the Lidocain will eliminate the pain.

Extra Anesthesia During the Procedure

During the tattoo procedure there is no reason to grit your teeth and endure if sensation begins to return to the area. I had one aesthetician who said it was normal that the area would become a little more sensitive 45 minutes into tattooing, but there is no reason to suffer. All that’s needed is a quick word or gesture to your specialist and she/he will apply an instant numbing cream or ointment.

It shouldn’t matter if the micropigmentation tattoo procedure is well underway, all good cosmetic tattooing centers will offer an instant numbing agent to help keep you comfortable and to allow the skin to relax and not get dehydrated as your aesthetician creates your permanent makeup eyebrows. The creams or ointments used should be water-resistant so it won’t matter if a little blood needs to be washed away midway through the operation, the anesthetic should still remain.

Anesthesia Spray – Lidocaine and Epinephrine

There is also a topical anesthesia spray that is very effective for after the skin has been broken with the needles. It’s especially great because it contains an agent that reduces swelling and it feels cool and gives relief midway through any procedure. If it’s not offered, and you begin to feel uncomfortable, ask for a spray to be applied. Make a note that you want Lidocaine and Epinephrine and any trained permanent makeup cosmetician will understand.

Avoiding Bleeding

If you tend to bleed, this may not only be uncomfortable and unhealthy but it may get in the way of the area where the eyebrow or permanent tattoo is being created. It is difficult to make fine details and use feathering techniques if there is blood. The artist or cosmetician also needs to follow the guide line that has been drawn onto the brow and too much blood or swelling or irritation may make this difficult. There is a special gel that can eliminate most of this. It is a coagulating gel that stops bleeding and swelling (specific for use during the creation of permanent tattoos) and can also be combined safely with any numbing cream or instant painkilling ointment. It also contains Epinephrine. Don’t forget to tell your cosmetician beforehand if you already know that you tend to bleed more than average so she/he can have the right products prepared.

Eyebrow Tattoo Needles

You may not need to know what tattoo equipment or what exact needle your cosmetic permanent makeup specialist has chosen, it may suffice to see her/him remove it from a sealed wrap and insert it into a rotating machine and know that it is sterile and disposable. However if you’re like me and like to know every detail of what is being done to your body and how everything works you may find the needle selection interesting and may even want to discuss with your aesthetician which needles will be used to achieve the desired effect on your new eyebrow tattoos.

One and Two Prong Needles

There are prong needles that are round and are used for adding filler to brows and for creating thick eyeliners and for lips. (Just a note: A lip tattoo is different from a lipliner or a full lip filling tattoo in that a lip tattoo is usually thought of as a decorative mark inside the lip and is done in an artistic tattoo shop, whereas a cosmetic tattoo for adding color to your entire lip is done in a clinic with special needles for tattoo makeup that are round and eliminate scaring on very delicate areas such as lip liner.)

There are also 2 prong round needles which ensure that ink or pigments are injected more quickly and evenly. The angle of the needle is also important and it is imperative that there is not a back suction of pigment and blood. Needles should all meet the standard of cosmetology and medical needles and be made of medical grade stainless steel, come in sterilized individual packs and be disposable. Any other kind of needles and you should seek a new eyebrow tattoo clinic. Modern eyebrow tattoo equipment should be sterile and/or disposable with no exceptions.

Three Prong Needles

There are also 3 prong needles which help skin to heal better because they have something to protect the sharp point and not bend or cause excessive bleeding and are also better for leaving fewer scars in delicate areas. These flat needles have a space for ink or pigments and this makes for smoother color and have a finer point, and therefore are best for eyeliner (and not tattooed eyebrows) because it can deposit more color in a finer line and therefore avoid some of the future fading problems. These specific needles (that are used in rotary machines other styles of modern tattoo equipment) are used to create the initial outline of a brow or for feathering techniques that make an eyebrow tattoo appear a little more natural as if it were hair.

Four to Seven Prong Needles

Yes, there are also 4 prong flat needles that function much the same as a 3 prong except they insert pigment even smoother and faster, however the ones most frequently used to fill in the eyebrow tatoo area (after having been outlined) are the 5 prong round needles. 6 prong needles are flat and again are better lipliner and feathering or creating the look of fine hairs. 7 prong round needles work in rotary machines to give strong lines and fill very quickly. This will depend on the size of the bow being tattooed and how fine or delicate the skin is and how the skin reacts to the pigmentation.

For all of these needles a small handheld rotary machine is required. There are also some small disposable sleeves that you may see attached to these machines to help the aesthetician grip better and to also avoid ink, pigment or blood splatter. If these sleeves are not disposable then you should make sure that you see the metal sleeve of the rotary machine having come directly from a sterilizer.

Eyebrow Shape with Stencils

Although the shape will have been decided before the procedure commences, it must be drawn or somehow applied to the brow area and remain as a guide for the eyebrow tattoo expert to use as she/he forms the brow with ink. Sometimes a pencil or brow marker may wear off or become less visible. You do not want your aesthetician guessing halfway through the procedure where to form the brow. One way to ensure that this does not happen is to ask if an eyebrow stencil is available. There are usually a dozen or more shapes that you can choose from and will be placed on your brow to ensure a perfect design. Sometimes an aesthetician will design one just for you if you discuss this in advance.

I can’t stress the need to do this pre-shape consultation with an aesthetician or to do some shaping through trial and error on your own brows with a pencil or with plucking technique, prior to anything else. Consult eyebrow shaping books and look at pictures and make a stencil yourself…anything…but get it right the first time so that you will never need to have eyebrow tattoo removal done because the shape was off. Your face is the canvas, the stencil or shape is the basis for the art that will take shape and it’s permanent and it’s on your face!

Eyebrow Tattoo Aftercare

Once the eyebrow tattooing procedure is complete it is imperative that your permanent makeup cosmetician apply a soothing and healing protective cream or gel to the newly tattooed area. Tattoo care is important right from the start. Remember that the region has had a needle inserted into the skin hundred of times and requires help repairing. It also needs something to calm the swelling that will occur but can be slightly minimized with a soothing cream, ointment or gel. You also want to protect the color which can begin to scab and crack and fall away taking the color with it. You do not want your new brows to flake away. So, your professional cosmetic tattooing specialist will apply a small amount of cream or ointment or gel using a soft cotton swab to the eyebrow or tattooed lips or eyes.

Now all that is left to do is to take a little cream home with you, listen to your homecare instructions carefully and wait.

Tattoo Care at Home

Don’t panic if your brows begin to itch and have scabs. Just don’t pick them off and don’t rub the region. It is best not to wash them and certainly don’t scrub them unless you want to repeat the entire procedure. If your permanent make up tattoo appears too dark, don’t worry too much. Eyebrow tattoos often look darker than expected for a few weeks, but they should fade. If you are unhappy with the shape or there has been a mistake or they are getting infected or the swelling isn’t going away after about 48 hours, you must call your aesthetician and also see if you may need an antibiotic. Also if the shape is a little off, you can get advice on how to pick off the scabs to eliminate some bad areas and have these retouched. Do not just go home and sulk if everything is not what you expected. Return quickly to the clinic where you had the permanent cosmetic make up done and immediately plan how to fix anything that is not to liking. It is best done early than late.

Give Your Brows a Month

In normal cases, the brows will heal in two weeks or so. Give it a month for them to be faded a little and totally lovely. That is why you should never have this procedure done anytime near an event where you must be in public for a wedding r special occasion. Plan your eyebrow tattooing procedure for an off season in your year.

Making the Decision

If you are reading this and have not yet made the decision as to weather you are going to go ahead with a cosmetic eyebrow tattoo or any kind of permanent cosmetic tattoo on your face, then here are some benefits you may want to consider. If you wear eyeglasses and your eyes are hidden from view and they are a light color and have little or no hair on your brows, then you might consider enhancing your brows to give your eyes some shape and zest from above the glasses. If you feel that your face looks dull or lifeless when you have little or no makeup then perhaps a little pick me up is in order.

Eyebrows can be enhanced with your own natural hair, eyeliner can be drawn on permanently with a tattoo around your eyes and your lips can be made full and splashed with color without having to spend hours a day or worry about waking up without your face. However the most common and popular procedure is the permanent eyebrow tattoo, which to set your mind a little more at ease, has been used successfully for centuries in Asia and only more recently has spread to Europe and the Americas. But don’t be frightened by thinking it is a new fandangle fad that is not a tried and true beauty technique that is well founded. The history of tattoos is part of the ancient oriental arts from China, Egypt, India and the middle east.

Many of the beautiful oriental women that western women admire for having delicate eyebrows and wispy long lashes and liner that extends away from the corner of the lashes have been enhanced by some cosmetic tattoo procedure. It is by no means a new art and will continue to beautify women’s features for a long time to come.

Temporary Eyebrow Tattoos

If you want to test what shapes may best suit your face shape and brow structure, it is a good idea to try temporary tattoo brows that are smudge proof and waterproof and will give you a good idea what to expect prior to a formal permanent tattoo procedure. Temporary tattoo eyebrows come in many styles and colors and are very cheap and can even be ordered online.

Temporary eyebrow tattoos are easy to apply and can cost as little as $10. there is also a pen available for #18 from Sephora that is waterproof and creates a temporary eyebrow tattoo or eyeliner that will give you an idea of what you can expect from a cosmetic tattoo eyebrows. However keep in mind that brows drawn on with a pen or a temporary tattoos are much inferior to those that are custom designed for you and are created with an eyebrow tattoo machine that will make eyebrows tattoos that mimic hair through feathering and fine hair mimicking techniques. If you like the results of what an inferior semi permanent eyebrow tattoo looks like then you likely be delighted with a the real tattoo.

Since eyebrow tattoo cost can be quite high (eyebrow tattoo price ranging from $400 to over $1,000 per procedure), having a sneak peek at eyebrow tattoos that stick on or can be drawn on in advance for a few dollars is well worth the time and effort. The eyebrows tattooing information that you may get from looking at pictures of tattoo eyebrows and seeing before and after shots and asking specialist how to tattoo eyebrows so you understand the procedure is not something you COULD do or MIGHT do if you have the time, it is a MUST do for anyone contemplating a tattoo. Please try some temporary tattoos and read the books available (I recommend some on this site). Please look at lots of eyebrow tattoo photos and watch some videos and search for tattoo eyebrows pictures online. Please ask the tattoo professionals as many questions as you can. You can also send me your questions or post them at the bottom of this article and will try to help, but it is best to discuss your specific concerns with someone in your area. I will soon try to include a list of professional permanent makeup experts and tattoo websites.

Permanent Makeup for Active Lifestyles

If you are like me and lead an active life where swimming and traveling are a part of your lifestyle, permanent make up and cosmetic tattooing can really make a difference. Also if you find that your eyes get watery in the wind or are very sensitive to the elements and make wearing makeup difficult, then permanent eyebrows and liner may be just the thing.

Many women are also very busy professionals and need to wear make up in their everyday life but are not adept at such things nor do they have an interest in drawing beautiful eyes and lips on every morning.

More Reasons For Permanent Cosmetic Tattooing

Other women have found that due to eyesight problems they simply forego makeup because they can’t see what they are doing or have shaky hands. These ladies need not worry if they have eyeliner and eyebrows permanently tattooed on and all they need is a touch of lip-gloss or a little powder on their nose and they’re good to go.
Another reason women opt to have permanent facial tattooing is because of allergies to commercial cosmetic products. Other ladies have had chemotherapy or have hair loss illnesses that have made them feel less feminine. These issues can be altered with cosmetic tattooing and can give ladies a whole new sense of self esteem.

You may just be sick of drawing eyebrows and eyeliner on each day and you want to treat yourself to a little something just for YOU. Try getting some liner done and then a lipliner and last a brow. Eyebrows are the most dramatic and therefore you can start slowly with a few other cosmetic tattooing procedures first to get your feet wet.

Selecting the Clinic or Tattoo Specialist

When you seek a clinic look for professionals who have experience with permanent makeup, cosmetic tattooing and micropigmentation or micro pigment implantation and derma graphics. There are pens, coils, rotary machines, and hand tattooing methods that all work well, but the best would be a rotary machine for eyebrow tattoos.

You can have your eyebrows enhanced a little or totally reshaped, you can have top and bottom eyeliner or just top or just bottom. You can have a little color deposited into your lash line just for a slight natural enhancement of color around the eyes and you can have a light lip line tattooed around your lips or have them totally filled in with pigment. You can also have scars made less obvious if they are in the eyebrow region and also have other cosmetic facial enhancements depending on what specialist are in your area.

Make sure that your professional aesthetician or tattoo artist is trained in their craft and have at least 40 hours of practice – more if possible. In the US there is a Society of Permanent Cosmetics. In other countries there are organizations that monitor the quality of these procedures by making sure the technicians or tattoo specialists are qualified and that the equipment is hygienic and modern.

Facilities can be tattoo shops in conjunction with piercing but must also have an eyebrow studio and/or a certified permanent makeup specialist who meets a standard and operates with international medical standards.

Hygienic, Sanitary Permanent Cosmetic Clinics

When you go to the aesthetic shop or clinic for an initial consultation make sure that the place is clean and that bedding or sheets are changed frequently and that in general the air is like a hospital or clinic and not like an underground tattoo shop where you would go to get a dragon tattooed onto your back. It is up to you to choose who will do this procedure. For you to be even better informed, go to list of permanent make up and cosmetic tattooing books that are available for sale through Amazon.

I met my husband 3 years ago in Barcelona, sitting on a bench in the old city, sipping a glass of wine as everyone does in the evening in Spain. We talked about everything from Latin literature to Polish Politics (of which I knew nothing) to art which we both knew a great deal. The conversation gradually led to what we liked and didn’t and who we’d dated and why it hadn’t lasted, which brought up the subject of a lady he had dated who had tattoos (and how it had been a total turnoff).

By about 3:00 AM, as he walked me to my flat, he asked if he could see me again. I replied that I was leaving for Seville in the morning and wouldn’t be back for some time, but that I was certainly wrong for him because I had tattoos. He stopped in his tracks and looked me in the eye. “Where?” he asked with disbelief.

“You’ve been looking at four of them all evening,” I said with a laugh.

He found it rather humorous to discover my only tattoos consisted of permanent make up, but I found it comforting to know that my choice to have cosmetic tattooing was not so obvious so as to scream FAKE at first glance. And the tattoo situation didn’t hinder me returning to Barcelona, falling love, and having a wonderful man chase me around the world until we finally married a year later in Hong Kong (where I had my eyeliner tattoo refreshed).

Me and my permanent eye make up

Needless to say I have been very pleased with my choice to have cosmetic tattoos because it has freed me of countless wasted hours of primping in the morning and helped me to feel relaxed and secure knowing I wake up looking like I went to bed and emerge from swimming pools and other physical activities without makeup running down my face.

My husband has often commented on is the speed at which I can be ready to go out. He is a rather spontaneous man and many times in the past 3 years he has entered the house and announced, “You have 7 minutes to be gorgeous and ready to leave!” To date, I have been ready on time!

I know that there are risks in telling other women of how fabulous permanent eyebrow tattoos and eyeliner can be because it isn’t always true. I also know that many of the ladies who will read this are from western countries where the idea of permanent make-up is relatively new and still perhaps classified as faddish. Yet it’s not a new concept at all. It’s an ancient art that has been used by ladies of style and class, by courtesans and by princesses for centuries. In India it is such a common practice to have eyebrow tattoos and permanent eyeliner etched around eyes that there is a tattoo shop or ladies beauty parlor that offers permanent cosmetic tattooing every few blocks.

In China and Japan almost all the mature, elegant ladies have some form of cosmetic tattooing that is quite obvious (and not very natural) since the applications from 30 or 40 years ago were much more dramatic than what is stylish today. But young women also indulge in having an eyebrow tattoo or eyeliner or lip liners tattooed because the techniques used today can be subtle and naturally blend with hair and skin tones.

Permanent make up may not actually change your life, but it certainly can give a little more freedom to a woman who values being feminine without having to arrive fashionably late.

Eyebrow tattooing is a cosmetic procedure technically called intradermal micropigmentation that uses pigments or dyes or inks in a similar fashion that artistic tattoos are done. Using a needle inserted in a tattoo gun with ink or pigment, the doctor or aesthetician or tattoo artist moves across the brow with the vibrating needle and implants the color under the skin.

If it is only implanted in the top layer it is considered semi-permanent, if it goes into the second layer it is permanent just like any other type of tattoo. This procedure must be done by a qualified and reputable technician and under hygienic conditions. Since it is a tattoo on your face, in a most delicate area, it can be painful, and requires a local or topical anesthetic to be applied or administered.

Why have your eyebrows tattooed?

The wonderful thing about eyebrow tattooing is that it can correct flawed eyebrows, shape brows that are not to your liking, make absent or hairless brow areas appear to have hair, and accentuate the eyes and face, and with little effort an eyebrow tattoo puts an end to having to draw on eyebrows each day. It’s also possible to sleep and work and swim and awaken or come out of the water with perfect brows.

Reasons not to get eyebrow tattoos

Some concerns about the cosmetic tattooing or permanent make up procedures is that it is relatively expensive, it may not turn out exactly as you hoped and the color fades over time requiring eyebrow tattoos to be retouched every few years. You can develop infection, though very rare, and may have scares if you do not go to a good technician or doctor.

You may end up with a shape that is unnatural or a color that is so dark you can’t hide them with makeup. You simply may not like your new brows and the only way to wipe them off is with laser surgery. Although most women, about 70% who have had the procedure, are very happy with the results, you must consider that 30% of them were not happy at all.

Additional Eyebrow Tattoo Considerations

When selecting a cosmetician, aesthetician, doctor, nurse or artist to do your delicate eyebrow tattoos consider if they will have the expertise to make your brow look natural by using a feathering technique and the correct color pigments that will match your own hair and skin tones.

It is important for you to understand the eyebrow tattoo procedure. It is not a quick eyebrow fix for a special occasion. It will take weeks for your brows to heal and for you to have the necessary touchups until they are exactly as you want them. They may fade and/or be too dark or too thick or too thin and may need to be fixed over a period of a month or two.

So do not plan on having your brows tattooed a week before summer vacation because you want to go swimming and not worry about make-up. And do not do it just before an important meeting or an event like your wedding.

It is important for you to select your technician or beauty specialist or doctor with care because the affects of permanent eyebrow tattoos are exactly that – permanent!

The Models Prefer Automatic Eyebrow Pencil is no longer available under the brand name Models Prefer, but is now called the ybf Transforming Eyebrow Pencil Duo that’s sold through HSN. It may be a very little thing, but the perfect eyebrow pencil can make a huge difference to a busy woman’s day, and not being able to find the one that was exactly right can be frustrating. So, here are the details about this revolutionary product that has women finally happy with penciling in their brows.

Women Claim It’s Still The Best Eyebrow Pencil

First of all, the eyebrow pencils from ybf come in a set of two. Each has a dual end with one side being the pencil with your brow color and the other end being a brush. This is important because one of the problems of getting a natural looking brow is grooming the hairs and smoothing the color into the hairs. The second problem that this special duo ended pencil solves is that of drawing natural looking strokes onto areas with sparse hair. The color and shape of the pencil, to say nothing of the consistency that’s just soft enough to be manageable, allows the user to apply feathered strokes, which are shorter and softer than just a strong line like what happens when a regular pencil is used. What’s also great about this ybf pencil eyebrow creation tool is that the color itself is formulated to have a variety of color intensities and a range of shades by simply applying more or less pressure and thereby matching your natural color. It’s almost like a SMART pencil.

Stacey Schieffelin’s Fabulous Little Pencil

If you wonder who makes it and where you can learn more about this fabulous little pencil set, then look up Stacey Schieffelin, the Ford model and makeup expert who has founded ybfstacey, and has added to her line of products items that really work for busy women. She also has a booklet with some practical makeup application tips that you can download for free.

A Less Known Waterproof Eyebrow Pencil

It’s easy to go shopping and find the Maybelline Define-A-Brow Eyebrow Pencil and see it’s a funky design and has some great features. It’s a self-sharpening mechanical pencil with waterproof color that comes in natural shades to suite a wide range of hair colors and skin tones.

It can also be used in conjunction with brow gel to set and groom the eyebrows expertly. The brow comb at the end of the pencil isn’t very practical for anyone with very fine or sparse hairs and that is a huge drawback to this pencil design. Many ladies end up having to use an old mascara brush to groom their brows because a comb just isn’t fine enough to really brush fine blond or soft brow hair. So, although the Maybelline color selection is great, and it’s a waterproof eyebrow pencil, it’s not a total winner due to the less than effective brush tip.

Compare another less well-known line of cosmetics called Pür Minerals®.

They also have a very funky design with pencils in almandine, coco, golden and natural shades that are all waterproof, but the brush at the end of the pencil is perfect for grooming. Have a closer look.

It’s also affordable retiling for just $17. The Purminerals products can be bought easily online at Zappos and other trusted cosmetic retailers. We suggest giving it a try coloring your brows is not just about color, but shape and grooming. Use the brush to eliminate traces of face powder that sometimes get caught in brow hairs, and use it also to blend more than one shade of color. If you have an auburn eyebrow pencil and a slightly darker one, you may want to belnd the shades to achieve a natural multi-color effect. Remember that hair is seldom all one color, be it on our heads or on our face. Natural strokes, lightly feathered, two or three colors blended and a good brush can make all the difference between having fake looking brows or natural ones.

Grey Eyebrow Pencil For Men

Although most colored pencils for brows are used by the ladies, some men use a grey eyebrow pencil to define their brows and use a small brush to groom them. One of the best is the item called Monsieur Brow Definer Pencil by Jean Paul Gaultier, with the grooming brushes separate. These are masculine cosmetics and are harder than the ones used by the ladies. They can be used to add a little color to an otherwise full brow, or to slightly darken light grey hair on the brow of gentlemen. The grooming brushes are not feminine and are very practical in simple black tubes.

Kits, Tips and Best Wax

Complete eyebrow waxing kits with strips and lotions for about $15; the best facial wax or soft cream wax for about $13; hemp wax for about $11; starter kits with waxing pot included for under $60 and pots alone for around $49; everything you need to create perfect brows at home. Step by step eyebrow waxing tips and recommendations for where to buy the best products available online.

What You Need To Get Started

What you need to do eyebrow waxing for men or women is basically the same. We’ll discuss brow shaping techniques for ladies and how to wax for gents later in the post, but first here’s what you need to have on hand:

witch hazel or some form of cleansing astringent (never use alcohol)

an eyebrow pencil, stencil kit or shaping materials

some Vaseline

a microwave, an electric pot, or a wax heater (called a Wax Warmer) to melt wax and keep it soft and easy to spread

the wax

a spatula or two

thinly cut linen or cotton muslin waxing strips

natural oil, preferably macadamia or almond oil, but baby oil will do or Wax Off

a soothing balm, light tea tree oil, Aloe Vera gel or redness reducing salve

a mirror with good light and a comfortable position where all your tools will be handy

Note: If working in the bathroom, remember you will probably need an outlet where you can plug in your wax pot, which we highly recommend, however you can also do it at the kitchen table and use the microwave, or sit at a vanity. We suggest that beginners cover the table, counter or vanity with a cloth that they don’t mind tossing away afterwards. If hot wax spills on furniture or counters it may be very difficult to remove and may stain because waxing formulas contain oils that easily penetrate porous surfaces.

Where To Get The Supplies You Need

Before you can do anything, you’ll need to go shopping and we recommend doing so online. Gigi carries a complete line of waxing products and kits that are affordable and very practical. Some require strips and others don’t. Here are some of the items we suggest and you can buy easily at Folica.com:

1. GiGi Strip Free Honee Wax Microwave Kit – this is a complete kit that does not require muslin strips because the wax itself will harden sufficiently to pull off on its own. This wax is gentle for facial use and is specifically created for those who do not have a waxing pot and will warm the wax in the microwave. You will get an 8 ounce jar of wax, which they call Honee, 2 ounces of astringent lotion for prior to waxing, an after wax product called Wax Off which works to remove excess wax and may replace the need for oil, a 2 ounce bottle of Slow Grow which helps to impede the re-growth of hair, and also they include a 2 ounce bottle of concealer to minimize redness. The kit also comes with 10 applicators, or spatulas in two different sizes. This kit costs $15.99 (We have included step by step instructions to follow the end of this post)

2. The GiGi Mini Pro Kit – This is a very comprehensive kit to get you started and do things as professionally as possible without having to go to a salon. Here is what you get: a wax warmer 9in other words the little waxing pot that melts and warms the wax), 14 ounces of soft cream wax, the necessary applicators in assorted sizes that will be ideal for the brow area and other regions you may want to wax, a total of 60 natural muslin strips in two different sizes, a pre-waxing cleanser called Pro-Hon Lotion, the necessary after waxing cooling gel, a cleanser called Sure Clean, the after waxing redness concealer, a post epilation lotion and some handy little tools where you can rest the applicators as you work. The complete kit that includes the wax warmer costs just $59.95. We recommend this kit because the average professional eyebrow wax costs about $15 to $20, so you will have paid for your pot and kit in just 4 waxes.

The supplies in this kit will last a long time, but when you do need more wax, the GiGi Gentle Facial Honee, which comes in a 14 ounce jar, and is specific for facial hair removal, costs just $13.50. And the other best eyebrow waxing formula which is the ultra soft GIGI Honee Creme Wax, which is easy to work with because it melts at a lower temperature and is especially great for sensitive skin, comes in a similar jar for just $13.95. You can choose the SOY Cream wax for the same price and is also recommended for sensitive skin types.

Replenishing astringents and lotions is also easy because the large 16 ounce bottles of cooling gel and other products are not expensive, most under $9 or $10. You can also replenish your supply of muslin strips and applicators or spatulas with small kits that are under $5, also through Folica.com. The cheapest ones are by a company called Satin Smooth, which also makes a good starter kit.

3. Satin Smooth – This company has a series of kits, starting with a all-inclusive eyebrow waxing kits for professionals for around $133, which include a professional style double wax warmer and all the lotions, creams, balms, waxes and strips you could need, as well as an instructional DVD that offers not just eyebrow waxing tips, but detailed instructions for depilation of other body parts.

However, if you can’t afford to invest in such a complete kit, the Satin Smooth collection also has a really affordable body and eyebrow waxing kit that costs just under $36. In that kit you get a small wax warmer for beginners, a 14 ounce jar of soothing vitamin E based honey wax, a special pre-wax cleanser, a residue remover, a soothing Aloe gel for after waxing and a few extras like a skin nourishing formula and some accessories. It’s a good deal and gets you started with everything a guy or gal could need to do their own brows.

Now that you have your supplies, if you are a man, or a woman waxing a man, skip to:
- Step By Step Instructions For Eyebrow Waxing Men and Women (below)

Eyebrow Waxing For Women – Starting with The Shape

The same basic techniques apply to both women and men, but the difference will be in the shaping and contouring of the brow before the waxing begins.

The ladies will want to take a moment to decide the shape they wish to achieve. An eyebrow stencil kit is the best way to start if you have not already begun shaping your brow. If you do not have a stencil, you can get one easily at Lovely Skin called the Form-A-Brow Kit by Senna. The complete kit costs $43, but you can buy just the stencils by Senna or Colorescience for just $10, also through Lovely Skin. It’s worth the investment to get the first shape right because waxing is not like shaving. The hair tends to grow in less thick after a few waxings and therefore your shape will eventually only need a little upkeep and not a total re-design. Using the Senna kit and colors you can begin to accent the hair by darkening them so you know what shape you’ll get. Or you can use an eyebrow pencil or gel to color the area you want to keep.

If this is your first time waxing your brows you’ll want to keep the color on the brow as a guide, however, in future, when you are more sure of yourself, and have a basic shape created, you can skip this step and go straight to disinfecting the brow area. Again, for first timers or those who are bit unsure of what they are doing, you can add a teeny bit of Vaseline, using a cotton swab, only to the hair area that you wish to keep. Be careful that the Vaseline does not get on any of the hairs you are about to remove. This will act as a fail-safe should a little wax get out of hand, so you won’t totally ruin your brow if wax were to spread in such a way that you pull out the entire brow…oops! But this won’t happen if the basic shape has a little Vaseline on it. Don’t use oil because it might run. We suggest petroleum jelly that will be easy to control with a cotton swab.

Note: Whether you are a professional studying the best waxing procedures or an individual wishing to do a professional job of waxing yourself, you may want to consult a great book called: Beauty Therapy: The Basics by Maxine Whittaker, Judith Ifould and Debbie Forsythe-conroy. And another helpful manual for ladies who want to treat themselves to the best at home is: Natural Beauty: Pamper Yourself with Salon Secrets at Home by Laura DuPriest, wherein amongst other things you can find a recipe to create wax and instructions on how to keep unwanted hair away for long periods of time.

After The Shape Is Decided

You have your shape. You’re protected against mistakes with a little Vaseline. Now we’re ready to proceed with:

Step By Step Instructions For Eyebrow Waxing Men and Women

1. The Wax preparation – If you will be using the microwave version of wax, remember to remove the lid, cap or plastic disc from the bottle or jar. It can take about thirty second to heat, but check each bottle or jar because it will depend on the kind of wax and the size of container. If you are using the GiGi Strip Free Honee Wax Microwave Kit, the wax provided is harder and thicker than the cream varieties. You will have to warm it initially for thirty seconds. Then stir it with an applicator stick, then keep heating and stirring every fifteen seconds or so until it’s like thick honey or molasses. Just be careful that you don’t overheat it and make it too hot for the skin. If you do, wait till it cools a little. Test a little on the back of your hand or wrist before applying to the brow or any other sensitive skin area you wish to wax.

</div
2. Pre Wax Cleansing – Using an astringent like witch-hazel or one of the lotions you have in your kit, like Pre-Hon Lotion, cleans the area you will wax. If you have applied Vaseline to the hair you don’t want to remove, then be careful not to do the entire brow, just the skin to be depilated.

</div
3. Direction Of Placing the Wax On The Hair To Be Removed – It is very important that you place the wax that is on your spatula uniformly going in the same direction as the hair is growing. In other words, the hair will be pressed flat and down and not standing up. Always apply wax in the direction that hair is growing. Look at the area carefully to see how it is growing because not all hairs are the same. In the brow it may be slightly upward and out.

4. The Actual Moment of Waxing – If you are using the Strip Free Honee Wax, then you will let the wax cool on your brow. You will sense it cooling and becoming pliable…not hard, and this may take around thirty seconds. If you’re using a cream or regular wax that requires strips, then you DO NOT wait for it to cool, but apply a small muslin strip immediately, pressing down in the direction of the hair growth and pull back in the opposite direction as fast as you can while holding the outer skin very taunt. Immediately press down on the waxed area with your thumb or finger to stop the stinging. If you have used the strip-free version, you will have waited for the wax to cool and then you’ll pull the wax off in the opposite direction the same as if you used a strip. Press down afterwards.

5. You should have removed the majority of hairs in the region. You will see them stuck into the wax or on the muslin strip. Do not re-apply more wax even if you see you have missed a few hairs. You can tweeze strays afterwards so long as the majority are gone.

6. If you have almond or macadamia oil you can apply a liberal amount to the brow area and use a soft cotton pad to remove all the wax residue stuck to your skin or remaining brow hair. If you have the GiGi products, then now is the time to use Wax Off. Be gentle, but please be sure to remove all the wax.

7. With all the wax cleaned off, now you can apply a little after waxing cooling gel, or some Aloe gel or even fresh Aloe Vera.

8. If you want you can finish off with the Benzokal Skin Concealer which will reduce redness. It is totally normal if you have redness or some bumps for a few hours in the area where you’ve waxed. It’s best to do your eyebrow waxing a day before any event because it could take 8 or more hours to look and feel normal.

9. If you’ve purchased a kit by Gigi that included a Slow Grow product, then you can use this after you shower the next time. Don’t apply right after waxing. But you can use it each time you bathe or shower. Just a little in the waxed area….not on the hair you want to keep.

10. When your brow area has stopped stinging, take a mirror and some tweezers and get the little stray hairs that didn’t come off with the wax. And now rest a moment. Don’t go out in the sun or go to a tanning bed appointment. Don’t get a facial immediately afterwards either, and wait a while to shower or wash your face. Try not to put makeup for a little while. The area will be sensitive for a while. Let it breathe.

The final eyebrow tips – coloring and tinting

If you have a beautiful shape, but your brows are very light, you may be interested in making the shape you have just created be semi-permanent by tinting your brow hair.

There are easy ways to do so like using the Godefroy Shape & Tint kits that only cost about $7. And if you buy one of these kits before you do the waxing, this is a good idea because waxing after a tint job is better. It leaves a defined color line and eliminates some of the tint that may get on the skin. You also will have the perfect shape and the stencils and waxing strips that come with the Godfroy kits. Try natural black, auburn, medium brown and jet black….Or use the Godfroy lightening kits if your brows are too dark. The lightening kits are a bit more expensive, around $16.

How to Apply Eyeshadow, Eyeliner and Eyebrow Pencil Naturally

Step by Step Guide to Natural Eyes. Eyeshadow Selection. Color Guide. Eyeliner Advice. Eyebrow Pencil Alternatives. Eyebrow Stencil Kits. Easy…Easy….Natural Eye Makeup Tips… We recommend some of the Jane Iredale products sold through Lovely Skin as we show you how to apply your makeup and what products you can use, however, you can choose similar items from other cosmetic houses and the techniques and ideas will apply equally.

1. Getting Started: Basic Eye Makeup Application Tips:

The most often overlooked aspect of how to apply eyeshadow has nothing to do with shadow. It’s what you don’t see. And it has nothing to do with color or application. It’s about the foundation or primer you use on your eyelids and face. But it’s really one step further back….it’s about your skin….so let’s start with the basics….and don’t skip this part thinking you already know it…this is much more important than the eyeshadow application techniques we’ll teach you:

2. Before The Foundation…a Foundation

A clean complexion, a freshly washed face and well moisturized skin is the basis of all good makeup, for the eyes and the entire face. Exfoliate, cleans, wash with cleanser (NOT SOAP), pat dry, regain the PH balance of your skin with a soft tonic or toner (nothing harsh even if you have oily skin), and moisturize with a non-greasy facial moisturizer. If you are not 16 years old, then you need to give the eye area a little extra moisture because eye shadow over dry skin that’s flaky causes the sponges and brushes to tug at the delicate eyelid area while applying color or liner and this will not accent your eyes but cause uneven coloring and a caked-on look later in the day. So give those eyes a little extra moisture….let the skin absorb it….don’t be in a rush to put color on your lids….Take your time to get smooth soft skin as your foundation and never apply eyeshadow directly onto moisturized skin without a foundation or primer, you’ll just end up with your shadow caking into clumps or looking greasy, heavy or creased.

You may want to use a product by Jan Marini called Age Intervention Prime Face Primer, also sold through Lovely Skin, which is a sirum that primes the skin and refines the surface, giving better elasticity and reducing redness or irritations while moisturizing. It contains enzymes, anti-inflammatory agents, Hyaluronic Acid Microspheres for moisture delivery, white tea, red tea and green tea extracts as well as natural pomegranate, to calm and help with cellular reconstruction of the tissue, especially for sensitive areas around the eyes.

Before we discuss foundation…here’s another tip: after you’ve cleansed, applied toner and moisturizer, and given your skin a sprits of Evian or rose water, go look in the mirror. Carefully! If you see little flakes in the T-zone, around the edges of your eyes, in the brow or anywhere else on your face, do not think to yourself that the makeup or foundation will cover it up. It won’t! Start over. Use a slightly more aggressive exfoliating agent (with tiny almond or apricot granules or even very fine natural sand) and really work the flaky areas. You can also use a small loofa sponge with facial foam to eliminate flakey skin, especially on the nose, in the brow and the t-zone. No amount of ingenious eye makeup tricks will make up for flakes or dry skin in the eye area or on the nose or especially in the brow rgion. If by cleansing your skin you find it’s a little red or irritated, then try Redness Relief Soothing Cream by Avene. It’s also great for soothing the skin after being in the sun, but in general, it relieves redness and moisturizes without a greasy film. It’s available through Lovely Skin if you want to buy it online.

Now…evenly spread your foundation over your entire face and blend well with a very smooth sponge. Take your time, using concealer under your eyes and on blemished areas, but blend and blend to leave your face smooth and with an even tone. Ensure that a light base of foundation, be it liquid, mouse or oil-free powder, is all around the eyes, on the eyelid, under the eye, between the nose and the corer of the eye, above the eye to the brow bone and above the brow itself. Don’t worry about getting a little in your eyebrow hairs…at this point it doesn’t matter. We’ll deal with that later. Get a complete and even coverage first. Now, no matter if you have dry or oily skin, lightly mist your face with Evian spray or a fine mist of natural rose water.

When the skin has absorbed the mist, take a large powder brush and lightly dust your entire face and eyelids with translucent powder. Use the brush to blend and leave the skin smooth. There should be no visible trace of powder, just a smooth surface.

Now prime the eyelid and brow area with a special matte finish powder or base. You can try the Jane Iredale Lid Primer, which is a revolutionary formula of hydrated silica that helps to control oil (which you eventually get even if you have dry skin) and minimize creased shadow on your eyelids. This product also helps to draw out recessed areas of the eyelids and offers a light shimmer to the eye, bringing it to life naturally. You can also try the Jane Iredale Absence Oil Control Primer or the GloMinerals GloLid Primer which is especially great for oily skin that needs extra control.

With eyelid primed and dusted and matte powdered….and using the best long-lasting colors….please keep in mind that eye shadow, like lipstick, does not last 24 hours perfectly matte and smooth no matter what the marketing or advertising on the fancy products say. Honestly, if you get 6 to 8 good hours of smug-proof, cake-proof, oil-proof color on your lids, be happy! So…we start the fun part…adding color. You now need a natural makeup brush and the series of colors to create the look you want.

3. Eyeshadow Color Selection and Eye Makeup Techniques For Natural Eyes

There are many sets of natural colors on the market, but to show you one that’s got everything you need, we start with the Jane Iredale Perfectly Nude PurePressed Eyeshadow Kit. It has five shades that start from a flesh tone cream to a light bronzing dust called Foxy, then a darker shade called cappuccino and an antique gold. The last is a rich Copper, which may not be needed if your skin is very fair. However, with these five shades, you have all you need for natural eyes for those with fair to olive skin tones. You can use the colors wet or dry, although we recommend not to wet your eyeshadow colors when you apply them (unless used as liner), but instead add the color smoothly in powder form and then lightly mist with Evian or rose water and use a large brush to blend. It creates a more even and natural look.

We start with the cream shade and spread it over the brow and inner eye area to lighten and brighten. Mist and allow to absorb. Dust the entire area with translucent power between colors. Since you’re not trying to achieve dramatic eye makeup, keep in mind that all you want to do is mimic, and slightly accentuate, the natural shadows that a large vibrant looking eye has naturally. We achieve this by only using the darkest shades at the outer edge and the fold of the eye. You want to use a light color in the inner corner and the central part of the lid and the upper brow bone, and darker shades on the outer edges and parts of the lash lines.

To open the eye start with the cream shadow, then add a triangular shape of cappuccino starting at the upper bone area, extending outward and then down to the lower lash area angled down from where you began the triangle on the bone above the lid. Fill the area darker than you want it, then dust it with a larger brush to blend the triangle shape.

Add a touch of bronze, copper or antique gold in the crease of the eye extending outward and upward, keeping in the triangle….bring the darkest color down into your lower lash line under the eye and the eyelid lashes. Dust again with a large brush to blend. Mist between brushes and colors if you want your shadow to last longer. Don’t allow the darker shades to go above the bone area where the bone elevates into the eyebrow. This area should be lighter…but be careful. Don’t over highlight the brow bone under the eyebrow with white or frosted colors like in the 80’s. Keep it a light flesh tone; always matte; no obvious shimmer.

With the darkest color in place, take a very soft eyeliner pencil or a liquid liner. We prefer liquid to make a thin natural line within the lashes, but some people prefer a pencil. In most cases an eyeliner pencil, unless it is very soft, will pull or stretch the eyelid and it is very difficult to create a sleek line, however it can be more easily blended with a small sponge…so which you choose will depend on what you prefer.

We recommend a thin line of liquid, dark brown liner, in the lash or as close to it as possible. Remember that you just want to make your lashes appear darker and thicker at the base, you don’t want a dramatic look or heavy black eyes. The technique that professionals use when applying eye make up (to give the eyes a larger and brighter appearance) is not to line the entire eye, rather just the outer edge is darkened, then lightly blended into the lash until there is almost no liner at the center or the inner corner.

For the above palette we’ve used, with copper and cappuccino, you can use the shadow itself as liner by applying with moistened brush. Use the pencil or liquid only in the corner area. Now blend with powder on both the upper and lower lashes. Mist….wait a minute…dust the entire area with a large brush….your lid should not appear to have a lot of color, just a gentle shadow from outer edge that gradually diminishes as you get to the center of the lid and the inner eye.

The two remaining items, to finish off your look, pertain to the lashes and the brow itself. These are no less important than the shadow and the liner.

4. Liquid, Pencil and Powder Makeup For Brows

Let’s start with the brow.

Shaping and coloring the brow with a pencil is difficult, but there’s a simple way to get almost perfect color and shape using an eyebrow stencil and a brush to add the color to the hair. The Senna Form-A-Brow Kit, available through Lovely Skin, allows for anyone with brow trouble, or those who need help with shape, sparse hair or very fine or light natural coloring to get almost perfect brows. You get 3 brow powder colors which can be mixed to your ideal shade. Use the brushes to add to the hair or to create the illusion of hair while holding the shape of the stencil desired over your brow area. Choose your look with several stencil shapes, one that’s fine, another natural, a third that’s fuller and a last one that’s extra full. The one you choose will depend on your natural shape. Do not go with a shape that is very different from what’s natural to YOU. The idea is to slightly darken the hair. It should never be very dramatic.

If you already have the perfect eyebrow color pencil or powder, then just buy the stencils, like the Colorescience Eyebrow Stencils. You can choose three shapes. Hold one to your brow and color the hair, or use them while tweezing.

By the way, you can easily color your brows with a fantastic product by Jane Iredale called the PureBrow Gel Colours. These coloring devices are like a mascara brush, but specific for the brows. They come in a range of colors and can be used to make the brows darker or lighter as needed. Using one of these brushes is better than using your mascara brush because it will almost always be too dark and may also look clumpy. The brow gel is slightly different because it leaves the brow hair naturally smooth and in place. You can mix colors to achieve the most natural shade for you.

5. Finish The Eyes With Mascara

Now you need to finish your look with mascara.

Don’t use anything with sparkle. Don’t use gold or blue. Don’t use dark black unless you have natural black hair. Stay with a medium to dark brown. And most important: make sure your tube is FRESH. Mascara needs to be tossed out frequently. One a month (or at least every other month), you should be buying a new tube. Mascara will look clumpy and unnatural if it’s slightly old. It will flake and leave little specks under your eyes and ruin the natural look you are aiming for. Fresh mascara! Once a month splurge on a new tube. It’s not expensive.

Applying Mascara

Apply your mascara (on the upper lashes) from the base of the lash upward in even strokes. Do not just color the tips of your lashes. That’s one of the most common mistakes. Lashes need a solid color from base to tip. Give a little extra attention to the outer corner lashes; usually they’re the longest ones that give your eye it’s almond-like shape. Play up the longest lashes just a little. You must use mascara on your bottom lashes also. It’s a big mistake to think you’ll look more natural without it. Use less mascara, but give the bottom lashes an even coat; otherwise your eyes look unfinished.

Soften The Lashes

The way to get soft looking lashes is to first wipe your mascara brush between a cloth or strong tissue….(don’t use cotton pads because the cotton sticks to the bristles). Wipe almost all the mascara off the brush.

Now use strong strokes to do each lash from base to tip. The brush will dry quickly, so reapply and re-wipe and continue until all lashes have a good solid coat….but you will se there are no clumps or lashes stuck together.

By the way, we suggest waterproof mascara at all times. You’ll use an eye makeup remover to take it off at night anyway, so don’t risk having raccoon eyes during the day. Use waterproof.

With these tips for eye makeup, and the right supplies, anyone can have soft natural professional style makeup. Choose your eyeshadow, your eyeliner and get in front of a mirror and practice how to apply eye shadow before you have to do it in a rush, or before your wedding.

Wedding Makeup?

If you’re looking for wedding makeup tips, the best ones are going to be natural….very much like what we’ve done today, with soft cappuccino and cream colors….

Pale blues, pastels and shimmering shadows are seldom a good choice. Stick with matte and neutral colors.

Let your eyes be the focal point and not the color of your shadow! Stay away from pink eyeshadow….save the pink for blush on your cheeks…be it natural or added with a brush.

Tired Of Applying Makeup?

Facts about Silk’n SensEpil and TRIA Laser home hair removal for women that uses light impulses (IPL); laser hair removal treatments versus home units; cream hair removal products like Veet and facts about Vaniqa cream; how permanent hair removal works to eliminate unwanted hair; who should consider light treatments and who should NOT.

1. The TRIA Laser is a system that removes hair permanently on the BODY

But it is NOT approved for FACIAL hair removal for women or men

It’s specifically designed to stop hair growth forever anywhere on the BODY however it has not been approved for the face. If you are considering this unit for underarms, legs, bikini area, etc…great….and it takes only about eight months to achieve smooth hair-free results, but not on the face…not yet anyway. We highly recommend the TRIA Laser Hair Removal System, which is FDA approved, and is based on the exact same laser technology as that which is used in laser hair removal clinics, but only for body hair. We mention it here because many ladies may buy it without understanding what it’s about. So here are some basic facts to decide if it’s right for you:

If you have medium or light colored skin and darker hair the light sensor will detect the darker hair. It is not recommended for those with dark skin pigmentation or those with fair complexions that have very light blond hair. The unit comes with a sensor that will indicate to you if it will be effective based on your individual characteristics. It’s not painful to use, although there may be a snapping or prickling sensation, especially when you begin and have very coarse hair. Later, as the hair growth becomes finer and less obvious, it is often noted that there is almost no sensation at all.

The first month of treatment will not offer results that you will be able to see, however, if you have patience, in the second month of use, the hair will become finer. After you have used the laser treatment system for about 3 months the hair will be obviously finer and the amount that grows back will be substantially diminished. If you continue to use the device for a few more months, you will see that the follicles actually have become disabled to such a point that hair simply does not grow. After about 8 months, your skin should be smooth and hair-free, permanently! If your hair is very coarse, it may require about 12 treatments. The unit costs $595, but you can make payments of as little as $49.95 to get started. There is no way you will ever get laser treatments in a clinic for that price. However….If you only want to eliminate facial hair, do NOT buy the Tria Laser. See the next product instead.

2. Silk’n SensEpil Home Removal Of Facial Hair For Women

Approved for below the cheeks removal of facial hair for women and men

It has been in the media and all over women’s magazines and the Internet, but what really is Silk’n SensEpil all about? Here are the facts:

Silk׳n SensEpilis one of the top rated and most technologically advanced home hair removal systems that can replace the need for more expensive treatments like laser facial hair removal for women. Studies indicate that it is effective and safe even on facial hair, however it’s not for everyone.

First, the hair you wish to remove should be from the cheek down. This is not a unit you will use to replace eyebrow tweezing or brow waxing. It is for unwanted facial hair on the cheeks, chin, upper lip region and below. It is not for the eye area and it is not for ladies with naturally dark skin tones. Caution must be taken to avoid the sun for about three weeks prior to a treatment and the same period of time after sun exposure. There are side effects if improperly used and these may include pigmentation alteration and even burns, so read the instructions carefully before using this product. However, it is an effective treatment for unwanted body and facial hair.

How does Silk’n SensEpil permanent facial hair removal for women actually work?

Silk’n SensEpil is a light-based unit that allows you to treat yourself, even on the face, as long as you avoid the eyes. It’s based on flashes of light, then a popping is heard when the pulse is activated. There is a warm tingle that accompanies the treatment. This is a system for long-tern hair removal, however, as with laser treatments it takes time. It can require many treatments over a year to two years to eliminate coarse hair. Some women notice a remarkable difference after just using the device for about 2 weeks. Hairs will fall out on their own.

How much does it cost? About $499 for the unit, but you can also buy through a payment plan that’s more affordable.

Professional Laser Facial Hair Removal

Laser facial hair removal for women through the American laser center, uses an FDA approved system with modulated RF energy and light impulses to eliminate even very difficult hair colors ….like the light blond and even red or gray hairs that sometimes are not able to be removed through home light systems. You will need various sessions, from about seven treatments to as many as thirteen or more depending on your hair. The cost will be determined by many factors but can be as much as $600 or more, in fact if your hair is very coarse, it may cost as much as $1,000. If you only need a small area, such as the upper lip or a spot on the chin, then it may only run about $200 per treatment. Still, that can add up over several treatments. That is why facial hair removal for women cream and home systems are so popular. We’ve looked at the home light systems that cost about $500, but what about cream? Is there a cream that works?

Ladies Hair Removal Cream

Veet is hair removal cream that really works. It’s not permanent but often unwanted facial hair returns finer, and after a long time, disappears. Although Veet itself never makes such claims, it’s known by the ladies who have used it for a while….and they won’t say for how long because…..well that’s a ladies prerogative.

If you’re going to use this cream or lotion on the face where there are more delicate tissue areas, try VEET® Sensitive Formula, which is a hair removal lotion that’s very mild, with lots of shea butter, and is safe for almost all skin types. One of the great things about this product is that hair re-growth is really fine, not coarse or thicker like after shaving.

By the way, if you’re in North America and used to buy Neet, it doesn’t exist under that name any longer. Veet is the French counterpart that is now marketing all products under the French name Veet.

Please remember that all the over-the-counter cream s that offer temporary removal of facial hair for women is exactly that: a temporary solution. Even if a side effect of using Veet or Nair or other depilatory products is that hair grows back finer and softer, the truth is that it is not a permanent solution. The best facial hair removal for women cream products that offer more permanent results will be addressed in the following segment about Vaniqa.

Does Vaniqa cream offer a genuine solution to facial hair removal for women with serious problems?

First, let’s address what some of the serious facial hair problems are.

Although many women may have facial hair from puberty onward, it is most commonly an issue that arises as women age. As female hormones change and decrease, especially during menopause, male hormones become stronger and sometimes cause an increase in facial hair, especially on the neck, perhaps the chin area or even on the cheeks and upper lip.

There may also some medical conditions and some hereditary factors that can make some ladies more prone to facial hair than others. Obesity can also cause an increase of male hormones because fat stores these hormones. Also certain ovarian issues and natural and hormonal fluctuations may also cause a certain amount of unwanted facial hair from time to time. This is not a little problem you have all alone, but a situation affecting millions of women, in fact over 40 million. Many ladies have been bleaching, lightening, shaving, waxing and threading the hair off their faces for years. But the hair doesn’t really go way, it grows back and every day the same issue must be solved over and over again.

So we now have something called VANIQA® which is not a depilatory cream like Veet that removes hair, but a system to stop hair growth over time. How? First, you can still have laser hair removal done, or you can tweeze or remove your hair as normal, but after you apply a small amount of the Vaniqa cream, and over time, some say after just eight weeks or so, the hair growth is reduced. You need a prescription from a doctor to get this product, however, many women feel it has been a useful aid to help to eliminate the unwanted facial hair . They use a thin layer of Vaniqa 13.9% cream about 5 minutes after their routine form of hair removal and it can be rubbed into the skin and left for about 4 hours. The next application can wait another 8 hours at least.

Just a note: Vaniqa shouldn’t be used by pregnant women or those breast feeding.

BASIC Beginners Guide To Hair Removal

We wish to make a note that all the information in this post regarding depilatories, home laser hair removal and other issues pertaining to unwanted facial hair has been created as a very BASIC beginners guide only. Before considering laser procedures please get as much information as possible on laser hair removal safety from places like the American laser center. Also before buying any expensive IPL hair removal devices, be sure that you have the right hair and skin type on which these devices will be effective, and please understand their dangers and limitations before investing.

Alternatives

Remember that before going for any type of cosmetic procedure, laser or IPL treatments consider threading hair removal like the Orientals use, or the ancient Egyptian system of sugaring hair removal which is not only less painful than waxing but leaves your skin soft as the syrup used. By the way, if you don’t know where to get sugaring without going to a salon, try the Body Shop. Their product lines vary from the UK to what’s available in the US, but we believe you can order it online under New Body Products in the main US Body Shop website.

Eyebrow tattoo healing will depend in part on how well you care for the tattooed area after the procedure.

Moisturize your Brows

After a procedure, all patients should receive eyebrow tattoo aftercare advice and support from their permanent makeup professional, and this may include a small kit of supplies and instructions for aiding in healing and some useful products that must be used along with the instructions. Aftercare for eyebrow tattooing is similar to other forms of tattoos and micropigmentation for lips and eyes, but brows often require a little extra attention. Your supplies or kit should include some antiseptic cream that also moisturizes. If you are not given any, then you may want to buy some Bepanthen on your own. Apply this with a sterile cotton swab several times a day. Do not rub or press the area too hard. Avoid pulling off scabs that begin to form, and try not to scratch. What you want to do is keep the eyebrow area clean, free of dirt or dust, out of the sun, and moist at all times.

Don’t Panic about Color for at least a Week

If you get home and look in the mirror and want to scream because your eyebrows are too dark, don’t scream yet. Wait a while. They will be a lot darker than you want for a few days. Give it at least a week. If during the course of healing they lighten to much, then when you go back to the clinic for your post procedure consultation, remember you can have touch-ups.

No Makeup, No Water, No Sun

For a week or so try not to wear any makeup, don’t use cleansers and do not go swimming or take saunas or go the spa. It’s also not a good idea to suntan. Try not to get your brows wet during the first week. To wash, just dab the eyebrow tattoo area. If they hurt, use cold compresses to ease pain and swelling.

Don’t Pull Off Scabs

Don’t be alarmed about anything for a week to 10 days (unless it’s red and infected for many days, then call your cosmetician or doctor immediately). Just add your antiseptic cream to the area about 6 times a day. Gently remove old cream before applying more. If your eyebrow tattoo feels tight and gets dry and scabby that’s normal, but avoid the urge to scratch or pick. Add cream and grin and bear it! Don’t pull off scabs because you may remove part of the pigment with the scab.

The Weeks and Months and Years To Follow

Once you have waited the week or two to ensure the eyebrow tattoo healing process is well underway, don’t forget to continue moisturizing every day, for a while keep them extra moist and if going in the sun, wear sunscreen. With or without an eyebrow tattoo you should never wash your face with soap but use a mild cleanser and warm water. If your new eyebrow tattoos have been done professionally and you have cared for them afterwards, then they should remain for many years without need of touch-ups.

There are books and magazines and lots of information online about permanent makeup and cosmetic tattooing so there is no excuse for being poorly informed prior to an eyebrow tattoo procedure.

Some of the books that I recommend deal with reasons to get an eyebrow tattoo or permanent makeup and others explain personal benefits and risks. A few of the books have been written for aestheticians, technicians and cosmetic tattooing professionals however these books also contain valuable information that a client may also benefit from. Being an active participant will encourage the specialist to give you the best treatment possible and you will find the cosmetic tattoo experience a fascinating one as you journey into the world of your own beauty.

I Love My Permanent Makeup

That is why this book is great for you to read before the procedure because it has the 65 most common questions and their answers regarding permanent makeup.

It also contains information regarding safety and includes testimonials from women from different parts of the world who tell about their positive cosmetic tattooing experiences and how their tattoo eyebrows have turned out. This book is the revised edition of Is Permanent Makeup for you.

Permanent Makeup and Reconstructive Tattooing

by Eleonora Habnit

If you’re like me (before I decided to tattoo my eyebrows), and are tired of the daily ritual of makeup, and desire to have perfect eyeliner, eyebrows and outlined lips then author Eleonora Hanit suggests that permanent makeup may be what you need. She also suggests that if your hands are shaky or you are allergic to cosmetic products the choice of having cosmetic tattooing or an eyebrow tattoo may be right for you. She writes that permanent tattooing can help to conceal scars and be the last step to completing a look after cosmetic or plastic surgery.

How to Create the Perfect Eyebrow

Again this book is not specific to the permanent makeup industry, but it is specific to eyebrows, and before any cosmetic tattooing or before a micropigmentation tattoo specialist even comes near to working on your brows, YOU must know the shape and style and have a plan for what you hope to achieve.

This book can help you decide on tattoo patterns for your brow and how you can work with a specialist to get that perfect eyebrow shape perhaps by using the suggestions to play with temporary tattoo eyebrows before getting the real deal, or by shaping your natural brows better so that eyebrows tattoos will simply enhance what you already have achieved naturally.

Here is what Victoria Bush discusses in 169 pages divided into 13 chapters:

Although this book does not discuss permanent makeup techniques nor eyebrow tattoos, it is a perfect compliment to cosmetic tattooing treatments because the end result is for a woman to use her features to look her best. How to apply a little foundation makeup in a way that will make her feminine after her procedures can be useful. The great thing about this book is that’s not about celebrities or unattainable model looks but about how to enhance your skin and eyes and bring your best to the forefront with your own true beauty from the inside out.

Tattooed eyebrows, perfect eyeliner and even lips filled with permanent color are a great place to begin, but it’s still necessary to know simple techniques to camouflage flaws and how to make your new eyes and brows really work in your favor. This book is for women of all ages not just the ones with young perfect skin. It has been recommended by Rhonda Shasteen, Senior Vice President, Marketing, Mary Kay Inc.

Melissa Schweiger is a freelance writer and editor with articles in Women’s Wear Daily, Interview, Marie Claire, Redbook, Hamptons, Seventeen, and In Style, and on Sephora.com. This is not a book I recommend for its intellectual merits or as a guide on cosmetic tattoo or microimplataion procedures. It is simply a book that may be useful to guide those who are searching for a new look and need ideas.

There are full color pictures and lots of brows and lots of simple beauty suggestions for beginners. It’s a picture book with lots of Sephora products but the faces and their eyebrows may serve to inspire your new eyebrow tattoo!

Eye Candy: 55 Easy Makeup Looks for Glam Lids and Luscious Lashes

Linda Mason is a professional makeup artist from New York who in this book has catered more to a young audience, however the eyebrow shapes in the 55 looks she offers in full color illustrations are good to find a brow that will be right for a younger person and for the older women who may want to see the difference between brows and makeup styles from fun daywear to dramatic eveningwear.

There are diagrams and instructions for makeup, but for those who are considering eyebrow tattoo procedures the photos are a great way to get an idea of what is possible, see different face shapes and arches and to see how makeup can be later applied to enhance the brows and facial features once the cosmetic tattooing has been completed.

Make-Up : Fresh Ideas for Fantastic Looks

by Bernadine Bibiano for The Body Shop

This may be a beauty book for beginners written to promote The Body Shop products, however, it is a very useful tool for those who are needing inspiration while seeking to change their eyebrow shape or their look because the photographs are not of perfect western models but beautiful real people from all around the world with a variety of skin tones and complexions and facial features.

This book does not discuss cosmetic tattooing but does offer real advice for looking your best and has lovely pictures of eyebrows that may provide the basis for eyebrow cosmetic tattooing. And, The Body Shop has some excellent products for caring for your skin; especially tea tree oil products that will help to care for your eyebrow tattoos after your procedure is finished.

Remember a little tee tree will sooth the swelling immediately after the eyebrow tattoo procedure and help to avoid excessive scabbing and crusting during the healing process. There are also tea tree sprays that you can lightly mist your face with when you feel your tattoo eyebrows itch and cannot scratch or rub them after days after the procedure.

Asian Faces: The Essential Beauty and Makeup Guide for Asian Women

Professional makeup artist Taylor Chang-Babaian has created a beautiful book with techniques and styles for Asian women of all ages and ethnicities. I have included this book on my recommended list not because it is the best beauty book on the market but because it has 100 full-color photographs of Asian women that might inspire eyebrow tattoos from where eyebrow tattooing began – Asia.

Although the technical aspects of cosmetic tattooing procedures are not discussed, I suggest it as a resource for finding YOUR look. Since this book is filled with gorgeous pictures that do not try to make Asians look Caucasian but enhance their own unique beauty features, I believe it is essential for international women who seek eyebrow ideas and makeup tips prior to micropigmentation or tattoo eyebrows enhancement.

Cosmetic tattooing is not a modern or new age fad. It a very ancient technique that has only quite recently been added to the list of cosmetic procedures performed in clinics by cosmetic professionals and not only by tattoo artists. In most western countries permanent make up, eyebrow tattooing, eyeliner and lip liner tattoos, also known as Micropigmentation (or micro pigmentation), are done by professional plastic surgeons, cosmetologists and highly skilled aestheticians.

Although cosmetic tattooing can be performed for vanity, as in my case, there are many people who use this technology to restore natural features that have been lost due to certain diseases such as multiple sclerosis or the results of hair loss after a chemotherapy or for those who have a condition known as alopecia and have lost all facial hair.

It is also a practical solution to makeup application for seniors who do not have steady hands, or for those who are visually impaired and can’t apply their own makeup on a daily basis. Many women are also allergic to cosmetic products and although they desire to enhance their natural beauty with a little touch here and there are unable to do so and therefore opt for cosmetic tattooing.

Permanent Make Up and Sensible Vanity

For those of us who choose cosmetic tattooing or permanent make up for reasons that appear to be purely vanity based, there is a sensible side to it too. Active professional woman may choose eyebrow tattooing or permanent eyeliner or lip liner to better manage their time. Many career oriented woman need to look great but have demanding careers that don’t permit them to fuss and fret over their makeup everyday.

Permanent make-up can save time and frustration for a busy professional who gets up early, cares for family or children and then must look “put together” at the office. For business women who travel a lot it can be a godsend to arrive at an airport just in time for a meeting and be already made up, eyebrows perfect and eyeliner un-smudged so that with a dash of lip gloss she’s ready for the boardroom.
