What Is Eyebrow Feathering?

Eyebrow feathering is a permanent make up technique used to make hair-like strokes in the brow area. It is a method for constructing natural-looking eyebrows, although it utilizes the same equipment and technology used in the older versions of eyebrow tattoo procedures which primarily formed solid lines to replaced brow hair, albeit rather poorly. Eyebrow feathering was the term first used for this micropigmentation procedure, however it’s now commonly called a defined hair-stroke technique. It’s been adapted to provide both highly defined hairs to structure a brow that may have almost no hair and/or to fill gaps between natural hairs and create the illusion of texture and depth.

The term eyebrow tattoo is still used to describe cosmetic micropigmentation procedures, including the latest techniques, which in one way or another deposits pigment into the dermis. Despite differences in techniques, the term “tattoo” continues to cover both decorative body art and cosmetic tattooing, sometimes with reconstructive applications. In most cases, permanent makeup clinics that offer eyebrow tattoo micro pigmentation services by certified technicians, will use a small vibrating pen-style device, which holds fine disposable needles that implant vegetable pigments in the brow, eye or lip regions. By contrast, many of the best tattoo salons will use coil or rotary machines that are much more powerful, but less suited to the sensitive facial / body areas where all permanent makeup specialist must work. For example, in the case of the eyebrow feathering tattoo or the hairstroke technique, a technician must be able to quickly make fine strokes, often dozens of them, in a tiny area, and this is best accomplished with a lightweight hand-held machine that can be guided smoothly, yet with great precision, just above a patient’s eye.

There’s a technique that resembles eyebrow feathering, or the defined hair by hair stroke, which doesn’t require any electric equipment at all. In the western world it’s known as soft tapping and some professionals may use the trademarked SofTap handles/needles to break the skin and implant pigments. The oriental method employs a fine glade to make hair-like incisions in the brow, into which pigment is gently tapped, thereby creating very natural eyebrow enhancement or definition.

Micropigmentation, permanent makeup and cosmetic tattooing are all terms that describe the same basic thing: implanting pigments into the skin to mimic eyebrows, replace eyeliner / lip liner / lipstick, reconstruct misshapen brows / lips and correct small scars / skin discolorations. Micropigmentation / cosmetic tattooing is a professional industry where technicians, aestheticians, micropigmentation specialists and beauty experts must become certified by undergoing rigorous theoretical and practical training and keeping up to date with the latest advances in technology and specialized techniques to offer the best and most natural results.
